It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Robert "Bob" Walter Howerton on February 13, 2024. Born on April 7, 1930 to Eugene and Elmira Howerton, he grew up in Clarksville, Virginia, the youngest of eight children. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Myrna McAden Howerton, one son, Jeffrey Dean Vaughan, three daughters, Rhonda (Phil) Grubb, Lisa Shelton and Myra (Jimmy) Dyke and was known as Daddy Bob to his 11 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren.
Bob enjoyed a 50 year career at Burlington Industries in Clarksville, however he was more widely known to people in the community as the “white haired man on the sidelines” following the mighty Bluestone Barons. His love of all sports led him to a sideline career of sports writing for the local newspaper, highlighting his beloved Barons and local athletes, some of which continued professional sporting careers. We would also be remiss not to mention his love of the Carolina Tar Heels and all Carolina Blue!!!!!
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, first wife and two granddaughters. A visitation will be held on Friday, February 16, 2024 at Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home starting at 11:00 AM with a funeral service immediately following at 1:00 PM in the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow in Oakhurst Cemetery in Clarksville, VA. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Jamieson Memorial Methodist Church and the Mecklenburg County Rescue Squad.
