A celebration of Ruth's life will be held on May 29th,2021 at 2:00PM at Brooks Lyon Funeral Home. Reverend Jack Stewart will officiate. BUFFALO JUNCTION Mrs. Ruth Loftis Green of Buffalo Junction passed away on Tuesday, October 6, 2020 at her home. She was born on October 20, 1948 in South Boston and was 71 years of age. She was the daughter of the late Graham Watkins Loftis and the late Margaret Brown Loftis and was married to Donnie Gray Green, who survives. Ruth was a member of First Baptist Church of South Boston. She had a love for her family, boating, planting flowers, rescue animals, and helping and comforting others. Ruth and Donnie were active members of the Harbor Village Yacht Club where she served on several committees and in various organizations. Ruth was involved with the Halifax County of Chamber of Commerce for many years serving on and chairing several committees. She served on the Private Industry Council Board-Halifax County, Advisory Board for Halifax County Public School’s Vocational Program, Community Management and Policy Board-Halifax County Board of Supervisors, DCC Advisory Committee and Mental Health Association Board of Directors. She was a member of a number of professional organizations and received the Outstanding Young Woman of America Award. Ruth received her B.S. in elementary education from Longwood College in 1970 and the M.S. degree in Counseling from Longwood in 1973. She attended the University of Virginia receiving certification for various educational roles. In June 2004, Ruth was certified as a Master Trainer of Achieve Global Leadership and Team Building Modules. Her career began as a teacher in the Halifax County, Campbell County and Nelson County School Systems. She was supervisor of Federal Programs with Halifax County Public Schools from 1974-1984, the owner and director of Green Acres Day Care Center from 1984-1995, director of Halifax County/Community Action Headstart Program from 1985-1997. She also taught classes at Longwood University, University of Virginia and St. Paul’s College. She was a mentor to everyone, always looking for the positive in every situation and always having a smile on her face. Ruth had such compassion and love for everyone and was an inspiration to all. Thank God for giving us such a beautiful person both inside and out. Also surviving is her devoted sister, Debra “Debby” Hackney and husband, Ronnie; nephew, Jason Howerton and wife, Amanda and their son, Jaydin; step- children, Donna Ann Garrett and Chuck Green; grandchildren, Will Dillard and wife, Corinne and Eliza Dillard; brother-in-law, Ronnie Green and wife, Joyce; last but not least her beloved dog, Jake Green and many special cousins and very dear friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Graham Brown “Brownie” Loftis.
