Ruth Averette Puryear

Mrs. Ruth Averette Puryear, 88, wife of Larvester Puryear, passed away Thursday, November 17, 2011 at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was born April 13, 1923 to the late Henry and Ida Murray Averette in Red Bank. A graduate of Virgilina High School with the Class of 1940 she was a member of Union Christian Church of Virgilina. Retired from Burlington Industries where she worked for 30 years, Mrs. Puryear helped her husband in farming. She was known for her extravagant Christmas lights, which she enjoyed displaying every year. Funeral services will be 2pm Saturday at Nelson Baptist Church with the Reverends Don Wilson and Jim McAlister officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. In addition to her husband of 63 years, Mrs. Puryear is survived by her son, Henry Jeffress "Jeffrey" Puryear of Virgilina. Her sister-in-law, Beulah Averette of Colonial Heights; nieces and nephews; and her beloved pets, Blacky and Snoopy also survive. The family will receive friends prior to the service, starting at 1PM. Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
