Samuel "Sonny" Ira Puryear

Clarksville, Virginia - Samuel “Sonny” Ira Puryear, husband of Carolyn West Puryear, passed away Tuesday, April 23, 2019 at the age of 78. He was born in Mecklenburg County on February 26, 1941 to the late Lonzer Ira Puryear and the late Mabrey Carter Puryear Wells. Sonny was a 1958 graduate of Park View High School. He was a retired sales representative and manager with Altria for 35 years, who loved his work family almost as much as his home family. Sonny was the definition of a true family man, totally devoted to the ones he loved. He was an avid outdoorsman, who loved hunting, fishing and gardening as well as sports, where he volunteered time as a little league coach. In addition to his wife of 55 years, he is survived by sisters, Sylvia Shepherd and Susan Sciotto (Paul) both of South Hill; niece and nephews, Jay Freeman, Jon Freeman, Jason Jones and Megan Shepherd, a host of great nieces and nephews as well as great-great nieces and nephews and by close friend, Dr. Heather Williamson. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Ann Freeman. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 26 in the chapel of Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home with Pastors Paul Sciotto and Kenneth Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at Bluestone Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
