ALTAVISTA, VA Shirley Hackney Comer of Altavista, formerly of South Boston, passed away on March 10, 2022.Shirley was born in South Boston (Cluster Springs) on June 11, 1931 to the late William and Mozelle Hackney. She moved out of the area with her husband first to Chester, VA and later to Northern Virginia where she lived until 2016 when she moved in with her daughter, Donna Comer Ruff in Altavista, VA.Shirley worked for Bendix Corporation for 25 years, starting on the assembly line and rising to quality control supervisor.Shirley will always be remembered for her positive attitude and her ability to face tremendous odds and adversitieswith a smile and an unwavering sense of humor.She used her humor and determination to successfully fight off cancer for over 20 years. In addition to her family, she enjoyed art, a variety of crafts, and gardening. She is survived by her brother William Hackney of Alton; her children, Donna Comer Ruff (Marty), and Zeb Comer (Penny); her 4 grandchildren; Cristin Morris (Thomas), Heather Younger (Steve), Holt Hamlett (Jimmae), and Cozette Comer (Thomas);her 6 great grandchildren, Rylynn and Alex Morris, Raegan and Addison Younger, Grant and Jack Hamlett.She is preceded in death by her brother Aaron Hackney; her sister Mary Sue Johnson; and her sister in law, Jackie Hackney. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, March 15, 2022 at Cedar Grove United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, 10-11 AM at the church.
