Shirley P. East, a long-time resident of Franklin, died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2017, at White Oak Manor in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Born in Halifax on March 28, 1932 to Wilma and Percy Perkins, she grew up in the beautiful rural community of Aarons Creek. She had recently moved to Rock Hill to be closer to her family.
She received her associate degree from Longwood College in 1952 and served as a voter registrar for Franklin.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Joseph D. East; her daughter, Sarah Baldwin, (Dennis) of Raleigh, North Carolina; her son, Mike East, (Pam); her granddaughter, Maggie Tindall, (John); and her great-grandson, Wyatt, all of Rock Hill; a sister, Mildred P. Woltz, of Aarons Creek; and her niece, Karen Mammosser, (John) of Suffolk. Shirley took great pride in making her home a special place for her family and friends to gather. She enjoyed playing bridge and creating beautiful needlework. She was an avid sports fan, particularly University of Virginia football, baseball and basketball. Passionate about her dogs, the family wishes memorial gifts to be made in her name to a local humane society.
A graveside service will be held on Nov. 3, 2017 at 2 p.m. at Oak Ridge Cemetery in South Boston. The family will receive friends at the family farm in Aarons Creek after the service.
