Shirley Estes Whitlow

Mrs. Shirley Estes Whitlow of 1926 Vaughan St., South Boston, VA died August 28, 2014 at the age of 88.Mrs. Whitlow was born in Halifax County on May 20, 1926 to the late Willie Fife Estes, Sr. and the late Sarah Odell McKinney Estes and was married first to the late James Edgar "Deanie" Shields, Sr. and then to the late James Whitlow.Mrs. Whitlow was a member of First Baptist Church where she was a Sunday School teacher who was loved by the children.For forty-seven years, she was an independent Avon sales representative. Mrs. Whitlow was a loving daughter, granddaughter, wife, mother and a good friend to her neighbors.She was independent and resilient and was the bedrock of her family.She loved family history and became the care provider for many of them.Mrs. Whitlow loved people and they in turn loved her. Survivors include a grandson; James Edgar "Jim" Shields, III of South Boston, and a number of nieces and nephews.In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by a son; James Edgar "Jimmy" Shields, Jr. Funeral services for Mrs. Shirley Estes Whitlow will be held Sunday, August 31, 2014 at First Baptist Church at 2:00 P.M. with the Rev. Dave Anderson officiating.The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service from 1:00 P.M. until service time.Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
