Thomas Ray Hayes Sr.

Thomas Ray “Tommy” Hayes Sr. of Nelson, VA, passed away on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, at the age of 71. He was born on May 4, 1952, in Oxford, NC, to the late Thomas Grey Hayes and Charlotte Puckett Hayes, who survives. He was known as a jack of all trades, he could do anything, but HVAC was his specialty. In his spare time, he loved camping and fishing and was one of the best drummers around. Tommy will be remembered as a kind man who always wanted to help anyone he was able.

In addition to his mother, Tommy is survived by his son Thomas Ray “TJ” Hayes Jr. of Nelson, VA; daughter, Summer Bynum-Lykins of Lincolnton, NC; two brothers, L. Allen Hayes (Teresa) of Nelson, VA, and Linwood Martin Hayes (Renae) of Suwanee, GA; a step-grandson, Nate Bynum-Lykins; and a nephew, Christopher Allen Hayes.

A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, June 1, 2023, at Averett Baptist Church with Reverend Jimmy Garland officiating, with visitation an hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Oakhurst Cemetery. All are invited to a celebratory meal in the Followship Hall of Averett Baptist Church, immediately following burial.
