It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Violet Katherine Cullum, a beloved resident of Alton, Virginia, who left this world peacefully on Sunday, March 16th, 2025, at the age of 62. Violet was born on March 4th, 1963, in Pennsylvania, and her legacy of love and warmth will continue to live on in the hearts of those she cherished.
Violet was the devoted daughter of Nellie Hancock Johnson and the late William Street Cullum Sr. She is survived by her loving children, Rachell Shockley and Ashley Shockley, and was the cherished grandmother to Jasmyn, Jordan, Alayna, Jaylan, Amiyah, Jamari, Adriana, Myles, and Natalia, as well as a great-grandchild, Evelynn. Her life was also enriched by her siblings, Debbie Thorton, Guy Cullum, and Luther Cullum. She was preceded in death by her siblings, William Cullum Jr. and Anita Ivey.
Violet shared her life with her life partner, John Stein Jr., and cherished John's children, Jay and Rachael 'Tootie', as her own.
A skilled machine operator by trade, Violet was known for her remarkable green thumb and her passion for gardening, both vegetables and flowers. Her love for nature extended to all creatures, great and small; she found joy and companionship in animals, from dogs and cats to horses, squirrels, birds, donkeys, and goats.
Violet's nurturing spirit touched everyone who knew her. She was more than just a mother, daughter, sister, and grandmother; she was a beacon of kindness and a source of endless love and support for her family and friends.
A private celebration of life will be held to honor Violet's memory, reflecting the deep love she had for her family and the warmth she brought into their lives. Arrangements for this special commemoration are being handled by Brooks-Lyon Funeral Home.
Violet's loss leaves a void in our hearts, but we find comfort in the beautiful memories she leaves behind. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
