Mrs. Virginia Webb Newman passed away peacefully at her home on June 11, 2009. She was born on February 22, 1921, to Sarah Sally Robertson and Lewis Presley Webb. Mrs. Newman graduated from Boydton High School in 1938 and spent her entire life in Boydton except for the months she lived with her husband, Alfred Haskins Hack Newman, in Riverside, California, when he served in World War II. They were married for 58 years until his death in November, 2001. After graduation from high school, she worked as a roaming secretary in various Mecklenburg County offices for several years. Later, she taught kindergarten in her home. As any child who attended Mrs. Newman's kindergarten will tell you, she made all children feel special. She taught simple life lessons of love, kindness, and honesty daily. Virginia was a lifelong member of Boydton United Methodist Church, which she loved dearly. She was active in many different church activities: one of these, caring for shut-ins, demonstrated her unselfish love for other people. This unselfish love carried over to her unselfish and unconditional love for her family. To Virginia, devotion to and closeness of family members was so important. Virginia was pre-deceased by three sisters and a brother. She has one surviving sister, Mary Webb Wray. She is also survived by her daughter, Betty N. Lea and her husband Harry; her two sons, Alfred Al H. Newman and his wife Judi and William P. Newman, Sr. Her grandchildren are Virginia Ginny L. Riddle and her husband Lea; Sally L. Burton and her husband Lee; Ivey N. Blunt and her husband Todd and William Will P. Newman, Jr. Her great-grandchildren are Sarah Haskins Riddle, Charles Webster Riddle, Samuel Lea Sam Burton, Virginia Ginna Catherine Burton and Jaiden Haley Blunt. Mrs. Newman is also survived by two step-grandchildren, Kate Pulliam and Bill Creery and three step-great grandchildren, Will, Hannah and Taylor Pulliam. Then too, she leaves behind many nieces and nephews who were devoted to her. Shirley Young and Lisa Baskerville were her caregivers and close companions for the past years. Mrs. Newman's services will be held at 2PM Saturday at Boydton United Methodist Church with interment to follow in Boydton Presbyterian Cemetery. The family respectfully requests donations to Boydton United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 38, Boydton, VA 23917; or the National MS Society, Central NC Chapter, 2211 W. Meadowview Road, Suite 30, Greensboro, NC 27407in her memory. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.wclfh.com. The family will receive friends at the residence Friday afternoon.
