Walter Stover Oakley

Mr. Walter Stover Oakley passed away on Wednesday, October 21, 2020.He was born on March 3, 1934 in South Boston and was 86 years of age.He was the son of the late Johnnie Samuel Oakley and Lizzie Conner Oakley and was married to Mary Crews Oakley for 65 years, who survives. Walter was a lifelong member of Black Walnut Baptist Church, where he served as Trustee, Sunday School Superintendent, and Deacon.He was a member of Cluster Springs Ruritan Club, where he served as President and numerous other capacities.He was extremely social and enjoyed everyone.He had a love for his family and always had a smile on his face.He loved to travel and was always ready to go! Also surviving are his children, Sheila Oakley Wilmouth and Randy of South Boston; Bonita Oakley Vaughan and Mike of Pfafftown, NC; and Karen Oakley Bauserman and Bill of Stephens City, VA; grandchildren, Justin Michael Vaughan of Charlotte, NC; Lauren Wilmouth Rice (Colby) of Timberlake, NC; Ryan Gary Vaughan (Dr. Lynsey) of Silver Spring, MD; Allison Wilmouth Wilmoth (Nick) of Scottsburg, VA; Lindsey Taylor Bauserman of Henrico, VA; and Caroline Morgan Bauserman of Richmond, VA; great grandchildren, McKenzie Snead, Brendan Snead, Brooklyne Snead, Gage Wilmoth, Alayna Wilmoth, Cayson Rice, Parker Rice, and Jax Vaughan; and dearest friends and neighbors, Bill & Gale Haley and Randy & Dale Smith. In addition to his parents, Walter was preceded in death by his siblings, Lottie O. Lowery, Harrell O. Claiborne, Zelma O. Ragans, Kathryn O. Franklin, Virley O. Clark, Esther O. Loftis, Henry Oakley, and Ara O. Duncan. A Funeral Service will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, October 25, 2020 at Black Walnut Baptist Church.Interment will follow at Halifax Memorial Gardens.The family will receive friends after the burial.Public viewing will be anytime at Brooks Lyon Funeral Home during business hours.Following CDC guidelines, social distancing and masks are required.
