William Bruce Arrowood, a beloved teacher and coach passed away on Monday, January 27th, 2025 at the age of 90, in South Hill, Virginia. Born on September 7th, 1934, in McClure, Virginia, he was the son of the late William Gilbert Arrowood and the late Oma Bise Arrowood. He is survived by his wife, Bernice Loftis Arrowood.
William led a life of dedication, service, and passion for education and athletics. A firm believer in the power of education, he pursued his own academic journey with vigor, graduating from Dickerson Memorial High School in 1953. He furthered his education at Hiwassee Junior College and East Tennessee State University, earning a degree in 1958. His quest for knowledge led him to the University of Virginia in 1970 where he received a Master's degree and included specialized training with the Virginia Department of Education in driver's education.
For 34 years, William devoted himself to the education system, where he shaped young minds as a teacher and inspired future athletes as a coach. His dedication extended across various sports, including football, baseball, basketball, and track. Passionate about safety and skill, he also taught driver’s education, leaving a lasting impact on countless students' lives. His legacy will be forever cherished by those who had the privilege to know and love him here at Halifax County High School. He exhibited unwavering commitment not only to his profession but also to every student he mentored. His influence extended beyond the classroom and sports fields—a testament to his kind-heartedness and commitment to guiding the next generation.
He is survived by his wife, Bernice; brother Jimmy Arrowood; nieces, nephews & many cousins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth Arrowood Sheppard.
A Graveside Service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, February 1, 2025 at Mt. Carmel Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends after the service.
