William Thomas Harris

ALTON Mr. William “Thomas” Harris, Sr. passed away on Thursday, December 19, 2019 at the age of 82.Born in Halifax County on October 13, 1937, he was the son of the late William Henry Harris and the late Janie Jordan and was married to Barbara Simmons Harris. Thomas was a family man, first and foremost. He loved farming, loved growing vegetables , especially tomatoes. He was a cattle truck driver and worked in a sawmill. He was a self taught musician of the banjo, guitar and harmonica. Being an outdoorsman, he loved fishing, hunting, the beach and the mountains. He never met a stranger and always kept the room laughing. Left behind to cherish his memories are his wife, Barbara; daughters, Patricia Shelton of Alton, Peggy Starr and husband, Alton Starr, Jr of Yanceyville, NC, Priscilla Harris of Alton and Christy Bomar and husband, Dion of Alton; sons, William Thomas Harris, Jr. of Alton, and Robert Harris and wife, Carolyn Womack Harris of South Boston; 8 Grandchildren; and 11 Great Grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Michael Harris and an uncle, Clarence Harris. A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, December 22, 2019 at Brooks Lyon Betty B. Jones Chapel. The family will receive friends on Saturday, December 21 from 2:00 – 4:00 PM at the home, 3148 Harmony Road, Alton.
