William Elliott Murray

SOUTH BOSTON Mr. William Elliott Murray, age 70, of South Boston, VA passed away Sunday, April 29, 2018. Born on August 19, 1947 in Halifax County, VA, he was the son of the late Virginia Marie Cliborne Walker and the late Raymond Elliott Murray, and was married to Remona Throckmorton Murray. In 1966 he joined the South Boston Fire Company as a volunteer fire fighter.His professional career began in 1973 when he was hired as an engineer for the South Boston Fire Department.Following the retirement of L. W. “Fats” Osborne in 1986, Mr. Murray was appointed to serve as South Boston Fire Chief, the position he held until his retirement in 2007. He was also an active member of Scottsburg Baptist Church and was an avid golfer. In addition to his wife, Remona T. Murray of South Boston, he is survived by a daughter, Melinda M. Long (Woody) of South Boston; son, Willie R. Murray of South Boston; sister, Bonnie Murray Fox (Donald) of Alton, VA; brother, Richard Wayne “Ricky” Walker; sisters, Cheryl Walker Barber (Ricky) of South Boston and Tina Walker Walker (Elzie) of Roxboro, NC; and by grandchildren: Corey W. Conner, Joshua C. Conner, and Brittney N. Murray.Preceeding him in death were his mother, Virginia Marie Cliborne Walker and husband Glenn; father, Raymond Elliott Murray; sister, Phyllis Walker Holt; brother, Glenn Allen “Buddy” Walker, Jr.; maternal grandparents, John W. and Willie Cliborne and paternal grandparents, Robert and Bertha Murray. Funeral services for Mr. Murray will be held at Scottsburg Baptist Church on Tuesday, May 1, 2018 at 2:00 PM with Reverend Kermit Evans officiating. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery.The family will receive friends from 12:30-2:00 PM prior to the service.
