Woodrow Pershing Lipscomb

March 13, 1916 — August 4, 2005

Mr. Woodrow Pershing Lipscomb, 89, widower of Susan Smoot Thomson Lipscomb, died Thursday, August 04, 2005 at his residence. Mr. Lipscomb was a native of Hinton, WV and a graduate of Duke University, Class of 1938. He was a member of Kappa Sigma Social Fraternity, Omicron Delta Kappa Society, the Order of Red Friars, and the Tombs. He continued his education, subsequently obtaining a law degree from Duke University in 1941. Mr. Lipscomb excelled in sports at Duke University, serving as captain of the 1937 football team, and was named All-American and served as coach of the freshman football team while attending law school at Duke. Mr. Lipscomb was employed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 1941 through 1966, at which time he retired and moved to Boydton. He practiced law in the town of Boydton from 1966 until his death. In 1974 he was appointed Substitute Judge in the General District Courts and the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Courts of the Tenth Judicial Circuit where he served until January 1, 2004. A 2PM graveside memorial service will be held Friday, August 12, 2005 in the Boydton Presbyterian Church Yard. Officiating will be the Father Doug Geddes. Surviving are children, Thomson and Jane S. Lipscomb of Boydton; grandchildren, Thomson Lipscomb, II and wife Amy of Khon Kaen, Thailand; Geoffrey L. Lipscomb of Raleigh, NC; two great-grandchildren, Book and Bank Lipscomb, also of Khon Kaen, Thailand; brother, James W. Lipscomb of Miami, FL; and sister, Olga L. Nye of Mountain View, CA. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Lake Country SPCA, P.O. Box 14, Clarksville, VA. 23927.
