SOUTH BOSTON, VA. Mrs. Doris Randall Hammond of South Boston, VA died Sunday, January 4, 2015 at the age of 90. She was born in Reisterstown, MD on March 31, 1924 the daughter of the late Elmer Randall and the late Alice Triplett Randall. Mrs. Hammond was a resident of Glyndon, MD for 55 years, where she served as Cub Scout den mother and PTA president, organized a Great Books discussion group, led historic preservation efforts, prepared population research for the League of Women Voters, and organized a local anti-war group. As a freethinker and humanist, she never hesitated to help those in need. She volunteered at the Soldiers Delight visitor center, area food banks, and the crisis center. Mrs. Hammond was a contributor to numerous peacemaking and environmental causes and was an avid nature enthusiast, gardener, and traveler. She was employed for 30 years as a bookkeeper in the family business, Glass and Mirror, Inc. Survivors include her husband of 70 years, Hardey Hammond; a son, Randy Hammond of Bellevue, WA; and a daughter, Peggy Hammond and husband, Grant Ellwood of Clover, VA. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Edith Sill, and a brother, Robert Randall. As per family request, there will be no services held.
